Energy Efficient Pool PumpsAn energy efficient pool pump can save you money and keep your pool looking good for those summer pool parties. Older pool pumps are one speed while newer energy efficient pool pumps are variable speed and made of non-corrosive, long lasting materials. A well made variable speed pool pump will outlast older types since it won't be working as hard as often, therefore extending the pump's life. This saves you money in energy costs and lifetime replacement costs. In addition to the built in savings that results from a pump running at lower cycles is the savings that results from having permanent magnet motors combined with digital controls as these utilize the energy most effectively. Whether using an energy efficient pool pump or the older one or two speed pumps, you want to cycle your water through the filtration system once every twenty four hours to keep a clean, clear and balanced pool. If using a variable speed pump, reduce the speed to cycle you water every twenty four hours. You will save more money by reducing the speed than by reducing the run time. Either way, first make sure your pool pump is appropriately sized. Too little a pump reduces your water quality and pool comfort. Too much pump wastes energy and costs more upfront. Another move that can save energy is to use the digital controller so most of your water pump's usage happens during off-peak electricity demand. For most areas this is between 8 p.m. and 10 a.m. of each day. If you don't have a digital controller, you can install a timer to regulate the pump's usage as well. Either way, don't forge to keep grates and intakes clear of debris and other material that could clog the opening and raise the load on your pump which increases your energy consumption and wastes money. Also, make sure your filter is cleaned or backwashed on a regular basis. This also keeps the electrical load on your pump low and saves you some additional money no matter what type of pool pump you own.
