What Are Algae? Algae are microscopic plants and there are more than 30,000 different species. In an effort to make identification easier, swimming pool algae are classified as green (chlorophycophyta), mustard (chrysophycophyta) and black (cyanophycophyta).

Green algae tend to be the floating variety, while mustard and black algae cling to the pool interior, particularly the cracks and crevices. The clinging algae are most difficult to control. Algae can cause staining and most often cause your water to turn green or yellow.
